This Is What God Looks And Sounds Like! Focus Verse: John 1:18 “No one has seen God at any time. The one and only Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he has declared him.” This seems like a strange focus verse for a 2nd study on what God looks like. Yet, in time, it will become apparent for all to see why we are using this verse. In Part 1 of “What Does God Look Like”, we used the scriptures own description to reveal a shadow of God’s true beauty. In Part 2, we will focus on The New Jerusalem, God’s voice, what His presence does to the earth, how no one can see God, and then how, if you have seen Jesus, you have seen what God looks like. Ending with the Bible’s description of what Jesus now looks like in Heaven. So, let’s get started!

This Is What God Looks And Sounds Like!

~PART 2~

Focus Verse:John 1:18 “No one has seen God at any time. The one and only Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he has declared him.”

This seems like a strange focus verse for a 2nd study on what God looks like.

New Jerusalem: God’s Glory

We Can Gather More Information About God’s Appearance From The New Jerusalem.

God Made A City In His Image

Revelation 21:10-11 “So he took me away in the Spirit to a huge, majestic mountain and showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God.  (11)  The city possesses the glory of God; its brilliance is like a precious jewel, like a stone of crystal-clear jasper

Revelation 21:18-21 “The city’s wall is made of jasper and the city is pure gold, like transparent glass.  (19)  The foundations of the city’s wall are decorated with every kind of precious stone.

1.           The first foundation is –jasper-, (Red)

2.           The second –sapphire-, (Likely Blue)

3.           The third -agate/chalcedony-, (Likely Copper Brown)

4.           The fourth-emerald,  (Green)

5.           (20)  the fifth -onyx/sardonyx-, (Light orange and the white of the calcedony, intermingled in alternate layers)

6.           The sixth –carnelian-, (Reddish)

7.           The seventh –chrysolite-, (Gold Color)

8.           The eighth –beryl-, (Sea Green)

9.           The ninth –topaz-, (Yellow)

10.      The tenth –chrysoprase-, (Golden Green)

11.      The eleventh –jacinth-, (Dark Blue)

12.      And the twelfth –amethyst-.  (Deep Purple or Violet Color)

(21)  And the twelve gates are twelve pearls – each one of the gates is made from just one pearl! The main street of the city is pure gold, like transparent glass.

Remember how we read above about the City of Crystal Clear Jasper.

This goes with the verse about crystal clear gold streets. It is meant to convey that it is without defect, fully pure, being able to see through the color of it without impurity or distortion.

This also makes sense since His throne is also a giant Sapphire stone fashioned into a throne.

Ezekiel 10:1 “As I watched, I saw on the platform above the top of the cherubim something like a sapphire, resembling the shape of a throne, appearing above them.”

The City is fully filled with the light of God’s Glory.

Revelation 21:22-23 “I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God, the Almighty, and the Lamb, are its temple.  (23)  The city has no need for the sun, neither of the moon, to shine, for the very glory of God illuminated it, and its lamp is the Lamb.”

The Sound Of God’s Voice

People cannot see God’s face, yet they can hear His voice, and the still, small voice in our soul of the Holy Spirit.

He Has A Voice

Deuteronomy 4:32-33  “Indeed, ask about the distant past, starting from the day God created humankind on the earth, and ask from one end of heaven to the other, whether there has ever been such a great thing as this, or even a rumor of it.  (33)  Have a people ever heard the voice of God speakingfrom the middle of fire, as you yourselves have, and lived to tell about it?”

Isaiah 6:8I heard the voice of the Lord say, “Whom will I send? Who will go on our behalf?” I answered, “Here I am, send me!”

God’s Voice Speaks Into And Can Be Heard In Our Realm

Matthew 3:16-17 “Jesus, when he was baptized, went up directly from the water: and behold, the heavens were opened to him. He saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming on him.  (17)  Behold, a voice out of the heavens said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

Matthew 17:5 “While he was still speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my one dear Son, in whom I take great delight. Listen to him!”

What It Sounds Like

    Like Thunder

John 12:27-30 “Now my soul is troubled. What shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this time?’ But for this cause I came to this time.  (28)  Father, glorify your name!” Then a voice came out of the sky, saying, “I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.”  (29)  The multitude therefore, who stood by and heard it, said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.”  (30)  Jesus answered, “This voice hasn’t come for my sake, but for your sakes.”

    Like a Large Crowd

Daniel 10:6 “His body resembled yellow jasper, and his face had an appearance like lightning. His eyes were like blazing torches; his arms and feet had the gleam of polished bronze. His voice thundered forth like the sound of a large crowd.”

Sounds Of Many Waters (Think of a Waterfall)

Ezekiel 43:2 “Behold, the glory of the God of Israel came from the way of the east. His voice was like the sound of many waters; and the earth was illuminated with his glory.”

Like The Wings Of Birds Fluttering

Ezekiel 1:24  “When they moved, I heard the sound of their wings – it was like the sound of rushing waters, or the voice of the Sovereign One, or the tumult of an army. When they stood still, they lowered their wings.”

.

    Still & Small

1 Kings 19:11-13 “He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before Yahweh.” Behold, Yahweh passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains, and broke in pieces the rocks before Yahweh; but Yahweh was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake; but Yahweh was not in the earthquake.  (12)  After the earthquake a fire passed; but Yahweh was not in the fire. After the fire, there was a still small voice.  (13)  When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle, went out, and stood in the entrance of the cave. Behold, a voice came to him, and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

    Loud & Powerful

Psalms 29:2-11 “Acknowledge the majesty of the LORD’s reputation! Worship the LORD in holy attire!  (3)  The LORD’s shout is heard over the water; the majestic God thunders, the LORD appears over the surging water.  (4)  The LORD’s shout is powerful, the LORD’s shout is majestic.  (5)  The LORD’s shout breaks the cedars, the LORD shatters the cedars of Lebanon.  (6)  He makes Lebanon skip like a calf and Sirion like a young ox.  (7)  The LORD’s shout strikes with flaming fire.  (8)  The LORD’s shout shakes the wilderness, the LORD shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.  (9)  The LORD’s shout bends the large trees and strips the leaves from the forests. Everyone in his temple says, “Majestic!”  (10)  The LORD sits enthroned over the engulfing waters, the LORD sits enthroned as the eternal king.  (11)  The LORD gives his people strength; the LORD grants his people security.”

To be in God’s presence, you must not value your life over God and His presence. You must be willing to die and be torn apart by His awesome power, and not resist it.

In Exodus, the people begged for God to stop as they could not take it anymore.

The People Feared God’s Voice & Presence.

Exodus 20:18-20  “All the people were seeing the thundering and the lightning, and heard the sound of the horn, and saw the mountain smoking – and when the people saw it they trembled with fear and kept their distance.  (19)  They said to Moses, “You speak to us and we will listen, but do not let God speak with us, lest we die.”  (20)  Moses said to the people, “Do not fear, for God has come to test you, that the fear of him may be before you so that you do not sin.”

Hebrews 12:18-19  “For you have not come to something that can be touched, to a burning fire and darkness and gloom and a whirlwind  (19)  and the blast of a trumpet and a voice uttering words such that those who heard begged to hear no more.”

Moses Was Willing To Risk It All Through Faith In God.

Exodus 20:21 “The people kept their distance, but Moses drew near the thick darkness where God was.”

Hebrews 11:27  “By faith he left Egypt without fearing the king’s anger, for he persevered as though he could see the one who is invisible.”

Later, Moses Tell Us The Intensity Of The Experience.

Deuteronomy 9:18-19  “Then I again fell down before the LORD for forty days and nights; I ate and drank nothing because of all the sin you had committed, doing such evil before the LORD as to enrage him.  (19)  For I was terrified at the LORD’s intense anger that threatened to destroy you. But he listened to me this time as well.”

Yet, He Remained Trusting In The Faithfulness Of God.

Bonus: His Singing Voice

Zephaniah 3:16-17 “In that day, it will be said to Jerusalem, “Don’t be afraid, Zion. Don’t let your hands be weak.”  (17)  Yahweh, your God, is among you, a mighty one who will save. He will rejoice over you with joy. He will calm you in his love. He will rejoice over you with singing.

The Effect His Presence

Has On The Earth

Since God resides in all dimensions seen and unseen, when He presents Himself within our four dimensions of height, width, depth, and time, very powerful and strange things start to transpire.

From Our Last Study We Read:

The Effect Of His Presence: He Purifies And Makes Holy

Exodus 3:4-5  “When Yahweh saw that he came over to see, God called to him out of the middle of the bush, and said, “Moses! Moses!” He said, “Here I am.”  (5)  He said, “Don’t come close. Take off your sandals, for the place you are standing on is holy ground.”

Let’s Continue On:

Psalms 68:7-8  “O God, when you lead your people into battle, when you march through the wastelands, (Selah)  (8)  the earth shakes, yes, the heavens pour down rain before God, the God of Sinai, before God, the God of Israel.”

Exodus 19:9-20  “The LORD said to Moses, “I am going to come to you in a dense cloud, so that the people may hear when I speak with you and so that they will always believe in you.” And Moses told the words of the people to the LORD.  (10)  The LORD said to Moses, “Go to the people and sanctify them today and tomorrow, and make them wash their clothes  (11)  and be ready for the third day, for on the third day the LORD will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people.  (12)  You must set boundaries for the people all around, saying, ‘Take heed to yourselves not to go up on the mountain nor touch its edge. Whoever touches the mountain will surely be put to death!  (13)  No hand will touch him – but he will surely be stoned or shot through, whether a beast or a human being; he must not live.’ When the ram’s horn sounds a long blast they may go up on the mountain.”  (14)  Then Moses went down from the mountain to the people and sanctified the people, and they washed their clothes.  (15)  He said to the people, “Be ready for the third day. Do not approach your wives for marital relations.”  (16)  On the third day in the morning there was thunder and lightning and a dense cloud on the mountain, and the sound of a very loud horn; all the people who were in the camp trembled.  (17)  Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they took their place at the foot of the mountain.  (18)  Now Mount Sinai was completely covered with smoke because the LORD had descended on it in fire, and its smoke went up like the smoke of a great furnace, and the whole mountain shook violently.  (19)  When the sound of the horn grew louder and louder, Moses was speaking and God was answering him with a voice.  (20)  The LORD came down on Mount Sinai, on the top of the mountain, and the LORD summoned Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up.”

Hebrews 12:18-21  “For you have not come to something that can be touched, to a burning fire and darkness and gloom and a whirlwind  (19)  and the blast of a trumpet and a voice uttering words such that those who heard begged to hear no more.  (20)  For they could not bear what was commanded: “If even an animal touches the mountain, it must be stoned.”  (21)  In fact, the scene was so terrifying that Moses said, “I shudder with fear.”

Psalms 114:1-8 “When Israel left Egypt, when the family of Jacob left a foreign nation behind,  (2)  Judah became his sanctuary, Israel his kingdom.  (3)  The sea looked and fled; the Jordan River turned back.  (4)  The mountains skipped like rams, the hills like lambs.  (5)  Why do you flee, O sea? Why do you turn back, O Jordan River?  (6)  Why do you skip like rams, O mountains, like lambs, O hills?  (7)  Tremble, O earth, before the Lord – before the God of Jacob,  (8)  who turned a rock into a pool of water, a hard rock into springs of water!”

Judges 5:3-5 “Hear, O kings! Pay attention, O rulers! I will sing to the LORD! I will sing to the LORD God of Israel!  (4)  O LORD, when you departed from Seir, when you marched from Edom’s plains, the earth shook, the heavens poured down, the clouds poured down rain.  (5)  The mountains trembled before the LORD, the God of Sinai; before the LORD God of Israel.”

Habakkuk 3:4-19  “His brightness will be as lightning; a two-pronged lightning bolt flashing from his hand. This is the outward display of his power.  (5)  Plague will go before him; pestilence will march right behind him.  (6)  He took his battle position and shook the earth; with a mere look he frightened the nations. The ancient mountains disintegrated; the primeval hills were flattened. His are ancient roads.  (7)  I saw the tents of Cushan overwhelmed by trouble; the tent curtains of the land of Midian were shaking.  (8)  Was the LORD mad at the rivers? Were you angry with the rivers? Were you enraged at the sea? Such that you would climb into your horse-drawn chariots, your victorious chariots?  (9)  Your bow is ready for action; you commission your arrows. Selah. You cause flash floods on the earth’s surface.  (10)  When the mountains see you, they shake. The torrential downpour sweeps through. The great deep shouts out; it lifts its hands high.  (11)  The sun and moon stand still in their courses; the flash of your arrows drives them away, the bright light of your lightning-quick spear.  (12)  You furiously stomp on the earth, you angrily trample down the nations.  (13)  You march out to deliver your people, to deliver your special servant. You strike the leader of the wicked nation, laying him open from the lower body to the neck. Selah.  (14)  You pierce the heads of his warriors with a spear. They storm forward to scatter us; they shout with joy as if they were plundering the poor with no opposition.  (15)  But you trample on the sea with your horses, on the surging, raging waters.  (16)  I listened and my stomach churned; the sound made my lips quiver. My frame went limp, as if my bones were decaying, and I shook as I tried to walk. I long for the day of distress to come upon the people who attack us.  (17)  When the fig tree does not bud, and there are no grapes on the vines; when the olive trees do not produce, and the fields yield no crops; when the sheep disappear from the pen, and there are no cattle in the stalls,  (18)  I will rejoice because of the LORD; I will be happy because of the God who delivers me!  (19)  The sovereign LORD is my source of strength. He gives me the agility of a deer; he enables me to negotiate the rugged terrain. (This prayer is for the song leader. It is to be accompanied by stringed instruments.)”

The Earth Reflects God’s Presence

Ezekiel 43:2 “And behold, the glory of the God of Israel came from the way of the east. And His voice was like the sound of many waters. And the earth shone with His glory.”

Habakkuk 3:3-19 “God comes from Teman, the Holy One from Mount Paran. Selah. His splendor has covered the skies, the earth is full of his glory.”

No One Has Seen God & Lived

Exodus 33:20 “And He said, You cannot see My face. For there no man can see Me and live.”

You Can’t See God’s Face And Live: Why?

Hebrews 12:29 “For our God is indeed a devouring fire.”

Exodus 19:21-25  “The LORD said to Moses, “Go down and solemnly warn the people, lest they force their way through to the LORD to look, and many of them perish.  (22)  Let the priests also, who approach the LORD, sanctify themselves, lest the LORD break through against them.”  (23)  Moses said to the LORD, “The people are not able to come up to Mount Sinai, because you solemnly warned us, ‘Set boundaries for the mountain and set it apart.’”  (24)  The LORD said to him, “Go, get down, and come up, and Aaron with you, but do not let the priests and the people force their way through to come up to the LORD, lest he break through against them.”  (25)  So Moses went down to the people and spoke to them.”

No Human Has Seen God.

John 1:18No one has seen Godat any time. The one and only Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he has declared him.

John 5:37And He sending Me, the Father Himself, has borne witness of Me. Neither have you heard His voice at any time nor seen His shape.

1 John 4:12No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwells in us, and His love is perfected in us.”

1 Timothy 6:16 “Who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light; whom no man has seen, nor can see: to whom be honor and eternal power. Amen.”

Only Jesus Has Seen God’s Face.

John 6:46Not that anyone has seen the Father, except He who is from God, He has seen the Father.”

For The Most Part, Unless Otherwise Chosen: God Remains Invisible To Us.

Colossians 1:15 “Who is the image of the invisible God, the First-born of all creation.”

1 Timothy 1:17 “Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.”

The Israelites As A Community Did Not See God.

Deuteronomy 4:15  “Be very careful, for you saw no kind of form on the day that Yahweh spoke to you in Horeb out of the middle of the fire,”

Moses Moved In Faith To Be With God.

Hebrews 11:27By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king, for he endured as seeing Him who is invisible.”

Moses Saw God’s Shape.

Numbers 12:8 “With him, I will speak mouth to mouth, even plainly, and not in riddles; and he shall see Yahweh’s form. Why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant, against Moses?”

Exodus 33:18-23 “And Moses said, “Show me your glory.”  (19)  And the LORD said, “I will make all my goodness pass before your face, and I will proclaim the LORD by name before you; I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, I will show mercy to whom I will show mercy.”  (20)  But he added, “You cannot see my face, for no one can see me and live.”  (21)  The LORD said, “Here is a place by me; you will station yourself on a rock.  (22)  When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock and will cover you with my hand while I pass by.  (23)  Then I will take away my hand, and you will see my back, but my face must not be seen.”

The 70 Elders With Moses Saw His Feet/Or What Was Under His Feet.

Exodus 24:9-11 “And Moses went up, and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel.  (10)  And they saw the God of Israel. And there was under His feet as it were a paved work of a sapphire stone, and as the essence of the heavens for clearness.  (11)  And upon the nobles of the sons of Israel He did not lay his hands. Also they saw God, and ate and drank.”

All Those Who Believe In Jesus Through Faith And Obey God, Will See God!

Matthew 5:8 “Blessed are the pure in heart! For they shall see God.”

Revelation 22:2-5  “In the midst of its street, and of the river, from here and from there, was the Tree of Life, which bore twelve fruits, each yielding its fruit according to one month. And the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.  (3)  And every curse will no longer be; but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and His servants will serve Him.  (4)  And they will see His face, and His name will be in their foreheads.  (5)  And there will be no night there. And they need no lamp, or light of the sun; for the Lord God gives them light. And they will reign forever and ever.”

As We See, This Is A Very Special Gift From God To See His Face.

If You Have Seen Jesus, You Have Seen Father God

John 14:8-10 “Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.”  (9)  Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you such a long time, and do you not know me, Philip? He who has seen me has seen the Father. How do you say, ‘Show us the Father?’  (10)  Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? The words that I tell you, I speak not from myself; but the Father who lives in me does his works.”

What Jesus Looks Like

The Heavenly Preview

Mark 9:2-3 “After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James, and John, and brought them up onto a high mountain privately by themselves, and he was changed into another form in front of them.  (3)  His clothing became glistening, exceedingly white, like snow, such as no launderer on earth can whiten them.”

Matthew 17:1-2  “Six days later Jesus took with him Peter, James, and John the brother of James, and led them privately up a high mountain.  (2)  And he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light.”

The Heavenly Completion

Revelation 1:13-16  “And among the lamp stands was one like a son of man, clothed with a robe reaching down to his feet, and with a golden sash around his chest.  (14)  His head and his hair were white as white wool, like snow. His eyes were like a flame of fire.  (15)  His feet were like burnished brass, as if it had been refined in a furnace. His voice was like the voice of many waters.  (16)  He had seven stars in his right hand. Out of his mouth proceeded a sharp two-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining at its brightest.”

Revelation 19:11-16  “Then I saw heaven opened and here came a white horse! The one riding it was called “Faithful” and “True,” and with justice he judges and goes to war.  (12)  His eyes are like a fiery flame and there are many diadem crowns on his head. He has a name written that no one knows except himself.  (13)  He is dressed in clothing dipped in blood, and he is called the Word of God.  (14)  The armies that are in heaven, dressed in white, clean, fine linen, were following him on white horses.  (15)  From his mouth extends a sharp sword, so that with it he can strike the nations. He will rule them with an iron rod, and he stomps the winepress of the furious wrath of God, the All-Powerful.  (16)  He has a name written on his clothing and on his thigh: “King of kings and Lord of lords.”

Revelation 10:1-6  “Then I saw another powerful angel descending from heaven, wrapped in a cloud, with a rainbow above his head; his face was like the sun and his legs were like pillars of fire.  (2)  He held in his hand a little scroll that was open, and he put his right foot on the sea and his left on the land.  (3)  Then he shouted in a loud voice like a lion roaring, and when he shouted, the seven thunders sounded their voices.  (4)  When the seven thunders spoke, I was preparing to write, but just then I heard a voice from heaven say, “Seal up what the seven thunders spoke and do not write it down.”  (5)  Then the angel I saw standing on the sea and on the land raised his right hand to heaven  (6)  and swore by the one who lives forever and ever, who created heaven and what is in it, and the earth and what is in it, and the sea and what is in it, “There will be no more delay!”

From My Forthcoming Book.....

The Following Is A Compiled Description Of Jesus:

“She starts “It has been said that if you have seen the Son, you have seen the Father, He is the expressed image of His Dad. The hairs of His head are white like wool and snow. His eyes are like a flame of fire also, and His feet look like polished bronze purified in fire.  When you look at Him, He seems to be as bright as the sun at noon day.  The sound of His voice is like the roar of rushing waters. When He stands before the Good King to serve, He wears a golden sash around His chest, clothed in a long robe. Yet, when He goes out to make war, he wears a Red robe that looks like it has been dipped in blood. Written on it and on His thigh is “Kings of Kings and Lords of Lords”. Being called “Faithful and True” by the Good King, He rides atop a mighty white horse, wearing on His head multiple crowns, having a bow like a rainbow of His head. He bears a sickle in His hand. He is the leader of the armies of the kingdom. The armies are also clothed in pure and white fine linen. They too ride white horses just like Him. And at all times He is called the Word, appearing like there is a sharp, two-edge sword coming from His mouth. His heart is just like one of His Dad in every single way. He ever lives to please His Father and serve on our behalf in the kingdom.”

We are now equipped with enough knowledge to provide confidence of what our God looks and sounds like. Plus, how His presence affects our reality. Not only that, we also covered what our Lord and Savior Jesus looks like. Truly our God and His Son are unlike any other. I hope this encourages you and stirs your spirit with joy and faith. Our God is the one true God, there is none like Him. No, not in power, presence, appearance and love. He is the only God. There are no other. YWHW, the God of the Bible, reigns supreme and has no competitors. Praise Be To His Holy Name Forever!
